The bob is a haircut that can work with every face shape and hair texture. It's a style where no two bobs can be the same based on each person's overall structure and texture. With slight adjustments like bangs, face-framing, moving the part, or length; can make it a unique look for everyone.
1. Sectioning: Start with 2 sections. Part the hair directly down the middle.
2. Establish the guideline at the nape.
Comb enough hair down to allow for a strong guideline. If needed add more hair to the section to create a strong guide.
Use the wide teeth of the comb to hold the hair and tap above it to release tension.
Cut under the comb. Do not hold hair with your hands.
Minimal tension on the hair. You want to cut the hair as close to the natural way it falls.
Elevation at 0 degrees
Stand directly in front of the section you are cutting to avoid over-direction
Work your way up the head using the same (blue) cutting line
3. As you move up the head and get to the hairline on the side. Keep following this pattern to the top of the head.
Tie the sections from the sides into the back sections and start cutting the front as you move up.
Stand in front of the section you are cutting.
Tap the comb before you cut to release tension on every cut.
If the first section on the side of the head is too thin to create a solid line. Wait until the next section higher up to start the guide for the sides of the head.
4. Dry the hair and refine the cut.
When refining you want to refine it how it was cut at 0-degree elevation.
If you hold it up this will graduate the hair or create layers. You will lose the solid hairline and create a different cut.
This one-length bob can be altered in many different ways. It's up to the hairstylist as an artist to adjust the cut to fit the face shape and texture of the client's hair.
Now that you have a solid baseline you have options to add faceframing, layers, or graduation. These decisions are all about the conversation you will have at the consultation. The key to mastering this cut is repetition. The best way to do that is to work with a mannequin head, if you take small sections you will be able to walk through the cut to practice technique and improve speed.
